Karina Nova

Yo soy Münkee

I am Münkee

Münkee’s -Karina Nova’s pseudonym- illustrations have some characteristics that distinguish them rapidly; a broad and vibrant color palette, accompanied by a bizarre, understanding of human anatomy, the fascination for black humor and his quest to give genuineness to the everyday life that surrounds her, without inhibitions in between.

Karina works as and Art Director in Capital DBG, but Münkee inhabits inly in screens and cyberspace, like the 90s cartoon that influenced her, statically and humorously. It was Escuela Altos de Chavón [Altos de Chavon’s Art School] in La Romana and Parsons School of Design where she developed her abilities, and tuned up her peculiar way to approach reality and started a series of experiments trough ilustración, animation and art direction. In each face, setting or typography, Münkee creates a visceral narrative but with a latent human core.

Capital: Who is Münkee? Münkee: My name is Karina Nova, but Münkee is al cyber alter-ego. It’s the side that I don’t show in my day to day, but trough my art. “Münkee” per se means nothing, it just like it. I wanted a name that had nothing to do with me, and if you notice, there’s nothing personal in my Instagram, Tumblr or Vimeo accounts. I wanted something of my own, but that people don’t know who is it.

C¿A qué edad empezaste a dibujar?

CAt what age did you started drawing? I started drawing doodles when I was very young; probably like 8. It interested me because I watched a show in TLC (The Learning Channel), it was called Pappyland and the host showed you to draw.

C¿Cuáles son tus cartoons favoritos? MAmaba, o todavía amo, a Nickelodeon, veía CatDog, Ren y Stimpy , Rugrats, La vida moderna de Rocko, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters (Aaahh!!!

CWhat are your favorite cartoons? I loved, or still love, Nickelodeon. But currently I like Steven Universe a lot, the creator includes a queer character and I like that inclusion in a cartoon made for children. Queer it’s not currently in my work, but I have plans of including it.

CHow has your work evolved? Well, when I was little I was basically imitating, but afterwards when I went to Chavón for two years and then to Parsons, that's where I started experimenting in less common things an well, I think I’m still evolving, looking for unusual things.

No cambiaría nada.

CHow were those years in Chavón and Parsons for you? MI went to Chavón when I was 17, straight from school and it was… how can I explain? I liked the experiencia, I learned a lot, but it was hard. Non the less, I loved it because it was super intense, and that’s where I learned a lot of the things that I know about art, history, drawing, design. I wouldn’t change anything. I graduated in 2008, won half scholarship to conclude my studies in Parson, which were in Communication Design.

CWhat are the main differences between both schools? MDifferences are big; while Chavón is much more intense and manual, one may say, because you work with your hands tuning up the technique and improving abilities, Parsons is more about analyzing, critical thinking, thinking about design, even though it has its practical part. Both experiences were unique.

CHow long were your in New York? MI was there three years: two studying and one in an internship, short work and so on. When I came back in 2012 I worked as a free lancer for two years until I came to Capital DBG in 2014.

CIs there someone that has particularly influenced your years of study? An artist, professor…? MYes, I’d say so. Maybe not my style but regarding their work and how they handled their classes. For example Raúl Miyar, has amazing handling of Fine Arts career in Chavón; Elías Roedán, was in charge of Graphic Design, and taught my sister.

I think my sister, Alina Landry Rancier, has also influenced me a lot. Now she works as audiovisual director but started in graphics design and then motion-graphics. Even though our styles are very different, from her I take that lever of quality she always has, her dedication to her personal projects and that she never stops. She’s very ambicioso, something that lacks in me.

My mom is a wedding cake designer, but she also studied plastics arts, so maybe we have a lot of her influencer and that’s why we both decided to go with design. She even taught crafts, Alina and I took those clases.

My mom is a wedding cake designer, but she also studied plastics arts, so maybe we have a lot of her influencer and that’s why we both decided to go with design. She even taught crafts, Alina and I took those clases.

C¿En qué espacio sueles trabajar? MEn mi casa.

CIn what space do you usually work? MAt home. My bedroom is big so I can do anything.

CHow’s your creating process? MI do what first come in mind, without thinking it twice. The last series started sketching in pencil and paper, without looking for references or anything, simply I sketched, and from memory, from some investigations that one could see how cells and microorganism form. Regarding colors I always want to use vibrant ones, that when they’re separate maybe don’t work but together they do. Other series I work digitally from the beginning .

In this illustration I took my face as a reference. The point is to make things with a bit of humor and irony, because if you look this is, is and ear infection and has a very satirical and “sick” tattoo.

CYour work shows a colorful, playful and experimental personality, but with latent darkness and morbidity, have you always have that approach? MI think so, at least in terms of color I've always wanted to use all the colors of the spectrum. I have always been interested in black humor, slightly morbid and quirky. Maybe not when I was at school, because I was still very naive, although I still am. Also, when I entered Chavón I had so much influence of many things and everything was at my disposal, I was able to absorb everything they taught me, both in technique and in theory.

CThe way you treat human body in your work is interesting, between grotesque but visually striking. MFor me it’s not gory, as some people have called it; there’s a certain obsession with anatomy, no necessarily human body, but yes, what we have inside interests me, even though I don’t understand quite well why this obsession.

Soy super meticulosa.

I like to stand out imperfections. I don’t like perfection, I like wrinkles and all imperfection a person has. Highlight the least a person has in anatomical terms.

This was for 36 Days of Type and I liked it a lot. I did what first came to my head, which was a hospital room and everything that happens there: the series is called Thirty Sick Days.

CIn your Vimeo profile (iammunkee) you say that your illustrations have been described as Wasted TV cartoons, what does that means? MIt is has to explain, but in the end it’s the King of illustration I do, a bit of Black humor, something morbid, but easy to relate to. I have and affinity to look for for something genuine in the everyday and in general I don’t like the normal. I also have a small obsession, of which I want to do a series, for fat and bald men, and basically look for something peculiar in that, in people who are not part of the molds, outcasts. Find this people’s humanity.

CHow do you managed to spared your personal and commercial work? MMy personal and commercial work and simply opposites. When I work something personal there are no inhibitions, I canto do whatever I want without no one telling me no, without guideline of specific vision of results.

CWhat are your planning to do in the following years? MI want to keep animating. It’s super tiresome but super cool to see the finished work.

CIf you could create any dreamed project, one, what would it be? MI Think it’d be a graphic novel, that’s in my bucket list. But obviously it’s super hard to do and to find a topic I’d like to talk about.
