Isabella, una lupa detrás del lente

Isabella, a magnifying glass behind the lens

"A vision about something, a look ... a magnifying glass towards a situation or a reality". That’s how Isabella Bretón defines cinema, a passion that probably lapsed since her childhood, when she was already able to captivate her audience by acting, dancing and singing, or a couple of years later, when she was already beginning to experiment with photographic compositions with her dad's camera.

Undoubtedly, that magnifying glass was there forever and was only taking its first steps.

From New York to Santo Domingo to London, her visits to Cabrera, her family’s hometown, and occasional trips back to New York, every kilometer has been important in her life ... but not because of the distance between each point , but for the people, situations and stories that have been encountered in them.

Although everything seemed to indicate what Isafueradefoco would end up doing, as it’s known in social networks. It took a turning point in his plans for this story to reach where it has today.

To live her childhood between the particularities and social differences in the environment of the Bronx and Jersey City, to se then how "together and, at the same time, separated" that is the people in Santo Domingo; the warmth of her parents' village: Cabrera, and a pinch of ‘fiesta de palos’ [a folkloric celebration], was a combination that fascinated her and convinced her thing was Sociology.

When the time came to choose came, she ended up leaning towards Social Communication, more for the social, than for the cinema itself, but it was precisely this convergence that formally opened her way in the audiovisual world as a means of expression.

In 2015, she received a scholarship for an intensive management program at MetFilm School, in London. Two years later she was accepted into an actor management program taught in New York by Adrienne Weiss, an internationally recognized acting coach.

As in all jobs, Isabella's influences come from everywhere: from her love of painting, color palettes of artists like Amedeo Modigliani, Gustav Klimt or Egon Schiele, to the aesthetics and treatment of Pedro Almodóvar, the free will of François Truffaut or the carefree humor of Jacques Tati.

Around 10 audiovisuals later, Isabella has experience in direction of different branches such as short films, documentaries, music videos and even a dance video. Many of them recognized and projected nationally and internationally.

Her first dance video was for a Jared Gómez’ choreograph with the remix of “In the morning”, from Gotsome & Jaded. Here, having to show wide angles so that each step could be appreciated, she decided to play with the color palette, art, costumes and a challenge for the entire team: only two shots sequence.

Isabella has directed two music videos. The first of them was "Rutina" by Sergio Echenique, in which she compiles images of Sergio during previous months, with a nostalgic tone typical of the song, inside a large black frame that, probably on purpose, isolates a little of its surroundings to those who see it, submerging it in its routine.

The second videoclip was also for Sergio Echenique, but with a totally different rythm. For the video “Ahora sí”, she payed with lights, dancers and coregraphs achieveing this result:

Among the documentaries she has made, she highlights “Herederos de nada”, one of the ones she feels most proud, which talks about Duquesa landfill, the people who live in its surroundings and the conditions in which they live. “These documentaries have left me with a bitter taste because of the conditions people live, but thy keep me with love for humanity: despide their situation, people are happy and grateful”.

“People that have gone through that, see it and tell me that if they would’ve notices that is microagression, would have understand that it’s not their fault. Being able to serve as suppont for a quiantity of anonymous women, that is important.”.
