Toc Toc, is Charlie Mu

Capital: ¿Cómo y cuándo comienzas a dibujar? Charlie: Empecé a dibujar desde que tengo uso de razón. Como en casa no teníamos cable, veía películas en casa de los vecinos e imaginaba historias, y esas historias las dibujaba. Como vivía en una casa con mis tías, mi abuelo, y otros familiares, cuando ellos cumplían años les regalaba tarjetas con dibujos.

Capital: How and when do you started drawing? Charlie: I started drawing since I can remember. Since we did not have Cable TV at home, I watched movies at the neighbors' houses and imagined stories, and drew those stories… Since I lived in a house with my aunts, my grandfather, and other relatives, when it was their birthday, I gave them cards with drawings.

C¿Y las ilustraciones? ^CMmm… Cuando tenía 12 años fue la primera vez que me puse serio con mis ilustraciones, a realizar tiras cómicas con los personajes que me inventaba y di clases de dibujo a unos carajitos que vivían por mi casa por intercambio. Mi primer interés profesionalmente fue hacer tiras cómicas; leía y dibujabas muchos cómics.

CAnd the illustrations? ^CMmm ... When I was 12 it was the first time that I got serious with my illustrations, to make comic strips with the characters that I invented, and I gave drawing classes to some kids who lived around my house by exchange. My first professional interest was to make comic strips; I read and drew many comics.

CEse estilo ha dejado sus remanentes, ¿no? ^CSí. Creo que a pesar de que he tratado de quitarme un poco de ese estilo, hasta bocetando me hace sale lo cómic.

CThat style has left its remnants, right? ^CYes. I think that even when making sketches, the comics influence comes out

C¿Cómo fue el tiempo en la universidad? ^CBueno, hice una gira nacional con eso. Comencé en APEC estudiando publicidad, porque la gente cuando te veía dibujando en el colegio decían que terminarías estudiando eso, pero al siguiente año me cambié a diseño gráfico. Lo dejé, porque ya estaba perdiendo el interés, además que había empezado a trabajar.

Dejé la universidad por un rato para tratar de enfocarme, hice un curso en Chavón de Realización de cortometrajes y cuando volví a la universidad fue a la carrera de Cine de la UASD, en la cual duré menos de dos semestres. Unos años después encontré la manera de realizar la carrera de Diseño gráfico en Chavón, el cual terminé en el 2012.

CHow was the time at college?^CWell, I did a national tour with that. I started at APEC studying Advertising, because when people saw you drawing at school they said you would end up studying that, but the next year I changed to graphic design. I left it, because I was losing interest, and I had started working.

I left the university for a while to try to focus, I did a Short film course in Chavón and when I went back to university I went to the Film and Cinema career in UASD, in which I lasted less than two semesters. A few years later I found a way to make a graphic design career in Chavón, which I finished in 2012.

C¿Y Chavón? ^CTuvo sus momentos; hubieron muchos buenos y malos. Momentos de aprendizaje, pero sobre todo, y va a sonar un poco cliché, pero fue una experiencia de muchísimo crecimiento. En lo profesional, formativo, cambió mi vida. La intensidad del programa y del proceso me ayudó a darme cuenta que el diseño gráfico y la ilustración son mis pasiones.

CAnd Chavón? ^CThere were some moments; there were many good and bad. Moments of learning, but above all, and it will sound a bit cliché, but it was an experience of a lot of growth. In the professional, educational, it changed my life. The intensity of the program and the process helped me to realize that Graphic Design and Illustration are my passions.

C¿Hay una persona en particular que haya influenciado tus años de estudio? ¿Artista, profesor..? ^CDiría que sí. Keith Thomas, quien fue mi profesor en Chavón. Fue una inspiración para mí incluso antes de conocerlo; cuando comencé mis estudios en APEC, estudiamos el caso del cambio de imagen del Banreservas, como en el 2003 o 2004, que me influenció muchísimo y más adelante en Chavón me enteré que fue él la mente detrás. Eventualmente trabajé para él, en lo cual duré cuatro años y fue lo mejor que me pudo haber pasado profesionalmente hablando. Aprendí muchísimo.

CIs there a particular person that influenced your years of study? ^CI would say yes. Keith Thomas, who was my teacher in Chavón. He was an inspiration for me even before I met him. When I started studying at APEC we studied the case of Banreservas’ image change, around 2003 or 2004, which influenced me a lot and later on in Chavón I learned that he was the mind behind it. Eventually I worked for him, in which I lasted four years and it was the best thing that could have happened to me professionally speaking. I learned a lot.

C¿En qué espacio sueles trabajar? ^CAhora tengo la suerte que en el apartamento donde vivo tengo un cuarto extra que utilizo como oficina, pero puedo trabajar en el comedor, donde sea, excepto en mi cama. Me gusta hacer la división de trabajo y descanso.

CIn which spaces do you usually work? ^CNow I'm lucky that in the apartment where I live I have an extra room that I use as an office, but I can work in the dining room, anywhere, except in my bed. I like to separate work from rest.

CEn tu trabajo se evidencia una mente que creció en la cultura pop: ^CMe fascina la cultura popular. Crecí con MTV cuando todavía era bueno, y a parte de eso, soy muy curioso, si me ponían una canción, necesitaba saber quién era el artista, las letras, información de la banda. Las películas por igual, a mí me encanta el cine. Y sobre las series de televisión… No me convencían hasta que vi Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones y Mad Men. Ese trío me enganchó.

CIn your work there is evidence of a mind that grew up in pop culture: ^CI love pop culture. I grew up with MTV when it was still good, and apart of that, I'm very curious, if I heard a song, I needed to know who the artist was, the lyrics, information about the band. Movies alike, I love movies. And about the TV series ... I didn’t like them a lotuntil I saw Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Mad Men. That trio hooked me.

C¿Qué tipo de sensación sientes cuando estás inspirado?^CComo ansioso, pero no de mala manera, sino que me lleno de energía, como después de que te tomas dos tazas de café. Estás con la actitud de ‘’le quiero meter mano, vamos a abrir tal programa y tal documento’’, qué sé yo, pero aún así le pongo mucho cuidado y cuando lo termino, lo ando enseñando. Esa emoción, ese high que te da un proyecto interesante y más si es un reto interesante. Especialmente de un tiempo para acá, porque era muy inseguro y si me presentaban un proyecto en el que había algo que no había hecho antes, desistía. Pero ahora le entro a todo.

CWhat kind of sensations do you have when you are inspired? ^CAs anxious, but not in a bad way, but fulfill myself of energy, like after you drink two cups of coffee. You are with the attitude of ''let’s do this, lets load this software or open this file'', I do not know, but I still take great care and when I finish it I keep showing it. That emotion, that hype that gives you an interesting project and even more if it is an interesting challenge. Especially from a time to now, because I was very insecure and if I was shown a project in which there was something that I had not done before, I gave up. But now I do everything.

C¿Cómo es tu proceso para crear? ^CMi proceso es un poco rudimentario. Pienso en lo que quiero hacer; en mi mente tengo una imagen de lo que quiero hacer específicamente. Si quiero concentrarme en un ángulo especifico, unos colores específicos, tratar de usar un recurso nuevo o algo que resulte diferente en cada uno. Después de que tengo esa imagen en la cabeza, que la entiendo bien, hago bocetos a lápiz enfocándome en la composición, y cuando tengo un boceto logrado, lo paso a la computadora y le dibujo encima en Illustrator.

CHow is your process to create? ^CMy process is a bit rudimentary. I think about what I want to do; in my mind I have an image of what I want to do specifically. If I want to concentrate on a specific angle, specific colors, try to use a new resource or something that is different in each one. After I have that image in my head, that I understand it well, I make pencil sketches focusing on the composition, and when I have an accomplished sketch, I make it on the computer and I draw it on Illustrator.

C¿Qué tienes pensado hacer en los próximos años? ^CQuisiera ilustrar un libro. Mi sueño es ser ilustrador editorial.

CWhat do you have planned to do in the coming years? ^CI would like to illustrate a book. My dream is to be an editorial illustrator.

CSi pudieras crear cualquier proyecto, uno soñado, ¿Cuál sería? ^CCrear una agencia de ilustración dominicana, que represente a los ilustradores locales. La intención es abrir más el mercado y darle una plataforma al talento joven. En vez que las revistas usen ilustraciones stock, un ilustrador dominicano pueda hacerlo para ese medio. Es un desperdicio de talento lo que está pasando aquí.

CIf you could create any project, one dreamed, what would it be? ^CCreate a Dominican illustration agency that represents local illustrators. The intention is to open more the market and give a platform to young talent. Instead of magazines using stock illustrations, a Dominican illustrator can do it for that media. What I see happening here is a waste of excellent local talent.
